Gene Hackman 's pacemaker was last operational on Feb. 17, the Santa Fe County Sheriff said Friday afternoon, suggesting the Oscar-winning actor had been dead for nine days before he and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were discovered in their New Mexico home.

"I think the autopsy results, the official results, are going to help us steer us in the right direction," the sheriff said in an interview on Friday.

Authorities in New Mexico continue to investigate the cause of death of actor Gene Hackman and his wife​ Betsy Arakawa, but they say it does not appear to be carbon monoxide poisoning.

Investigators are trying to figure out the last time anyone saw or spoke to them, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza told NBC’s “Today” show on Friday.
