(CNN) - Norway has reached a significant milestone. It is now the first country to have more electric vehicles than pure gas-powered cars on the road. The Norwegian Road Federation says of its nearly 3,000,000 registered passenger vehicles, 26% are fully electric, slightly higher than gas vehicles.

Hot on the heels of still-dominant diesel cars, electric vehicles now outnumber petrol models for the first time in oil-rich Norway, a world first that puts the country on track to taking fossil fuel vehicles off the road.

Of the 2.8 million private cars registered in the Scandinavian country, 754,303 are all-electric, compared to 753,905 that run on petrol, the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV) said in a statement.

Norway is the first country in which more electric cars than petrol cars are registered. However, vehicles with diesel engines are still in the lead.

Electric car registrations outpaced gas-powered for the first time this month, thanks in part to tax breaks funded by a booming petroleum business.

There's a country, in northern Europe, where the electric car has overtaken the petrol car. Thanks to tax incentives, more than half Norwegians have chosen volts over octane ratings. Despite the cold,
