With Houston Police Department reaching an agreement that will offer 36.5% in raises over the next five years, more than 100 deputies applied for the better-paying city jobs, leading Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez to ask county commissioners to give his staff raises.

The starting salary for a Harris County Sheriff's Deputy is about $57,000. It's about $64,000 for a Houston Police Officer. That jumps to $81,000 by this July, a $24,000 gap.
