Kodak stock jumped Tuesday after it found a lot of cash—in the company’s pension plan. Monday, Kodak said its pension plan sold “illiquid” assets worth about $764 million for about $551 million. It’s selling some other assets listed at $87 million for $62 million.

Eastman Kodak has begun taking steps to end its $3.5 billion pension plan, agreeing to sell private-equity and other illiquid assets attached to it.

Eastman Kodak Co. is making changes to its pension plan, including selling some of its assets and possibly terminating the plan.

Kodak stands to gain more than a half-billion dollars if the current pension plan is terminated, due to a surplus in the fund. Company officials said the changes would also 'preserve and protect' the retirement benefits of current participants in the plan.

According to a filing with the SEC, Kodak said that it looks to cut its pension plan. The plan has increased significantly due to initial contributions and market performance. The SEC filing stated that Kodak looks to use the cash from the cut and sale of the plan,

Kodak could benefit from a whopping $585m (£464m) windfall – more than the current value of the entire company – if plans to sell off its pension fund come to fruition.

The board of Eastman Kodak’s pension plan sold a portfolio of illiquid assets to the Mastercard Foundation and is considering winding down the rest of the fund, as the company looks to tap the roughly $1 billion surplus it built up over the years.
