The ESB said that restoration efforts have become protracted as some lines taking hours to repair only serve one or two homes.

A man died and hundreds of thousands of people in Britain and Ireland have been left without power as high winds and heavy rain battered the region.

NIE Networks says power has been restored to nearly all of its customers following Storm Darragh. It said 15 customers still require more complex repairs but that "generators have been provided to ensure they have electricity until permanent fixes are completed".

ESB Networks has said that 4,000 customers are still without power as a result of Storm Darragh. The key areas impacted remain to be Carrick-on-Shannon in Co Leitrim, Tullamore Co Offaly, and Arklow in Co Wicklow as well as parts of Co Cavan.

More than 2,000 homes and businesses still have no power after Storm Darragh hit the country over the weekend. Some people in Somerset have had no power or internet for three days. The village of Porlock went without power for 30 hours and power was lost again on Monday for about six hours.
