The Village People are fighting! In the wake of Victor Willis, the iconic disco band’s founder/lead singer/traffic cop, bemoaning the notion that “Y.M.C.A.” is a gay anthem, another member of the group is pushing back.

The Village People’s lyricist and lead singer has hit out at the “false assumption” that the band’s biggest hit, “YMCA,” is a “gay anthem.”

Victor Willis, one of the Village People's founders, posted to social media on Monday defending President-elect Donald Trump 's use of the song “Y.M.C.A.” and threatening legal action against any news organization that labels the iconic tune a gay anthem.

Victor Willis said the disco classic has “benefited greatly” from the president-elect’s use and threatened to sue news outlets that refer to it as a “gay anthem.”

The singer suggested Village People will not play at Trump’s inauguration due to concern over a performance appearing as an endorsement. The band has allowed the president-elect to use “Y.M.C.A.” because of his fondness for the 1970s smash hit and issues he has faced using other songs, according to Willis.

Donald Trump made the 1970s hit “YMCA” by the Village People one of the theme songs of his 2024 presidential campaign, with the Republican presidential candidate ending each rally by doing his signature dance to the song.
