U.S. stock indexes remained stuck in place as Wall Street waited for the Federal Reserve to make its first interest rate cut in more than four years.

Wall Street's main indexes opened higher with the benchmark S&P 500 close to its intraday record high, ahead of the Federal Reserve's policy meeting starting on Tuesday, after data signaling a healthy consumer allayed worries of a sharp slowdown in the U.

Market participants increased their bets on Friday that the Federal Reserve will move aggressively when it starts cutting interest rates next week.
