Gold’s rally has owners of the precious metal torn between taking profit or sitting on their hoard. Here’s a handy guide.

The company sold more than $100 million in gold bars in a three-month period between September and November 2023. It's betting that platinum will do just as well.

The Swiss-made bars are only available to Costco members, whose annual fees range from $65 to $130. Made of 999.5 pure platinum, the bars are non-refundable and limited to one transaction per membership at a maximum of five units per order. They are only available online and can’t be delivered to customers in Louisiana, Nevada or Puerto Rico.

Costco Wholesale (COST) is getting further into the precious metals business. While gold bars and silver coins have previously been top of mind for shoppers, the retailer is now adding a third precious metal: platinum.

The 1-ounce platinum bar sells for $1,090. Sales of gold bars on Costco's website have previously sold out in minutes.

The bar is only sold online, and Costco says delivery is unavailable in Nevada, Louisiana and Puerto Rico. But the Costco site on Thursday also noted that the platinum bar was unavailable for delivery in several other locations throughout the U.S., including New York and Utah.

The big-box chain is now selling Swiss-made 1 oz. platinum bars for $1,089.99 on its website, but a Costco membership is required for purchase. The bar features Lady Fortuna, the Roman goddess of prosperity, according to the manufacturer’s website.

Costco has added platinum to its precious metals offering, but experts caution that the coins and bars are not considered a safe-haven investment.
