Kansas became the latest state to ban gender-affirming care for minors Tuesday after the Republican-controlled Legislature overrode the Democratic governor's veto of the measure. Kansas is the 27th state to ban or restrict such care.

The decision by the GOP-controlled legislature follows similar moves by about two dozen states. Kansas’s Democratic governor had vetoed the bill last year.

After several years of failed attempts, Kansas Republican lawmakers mustered the votes necessary to override Gov. Laura Kelly’s veto and force a gender-affirming care ban for minors into law.

Physicians currently administering gender-affirming care to minors will have until Dec. 31 to cease treatment or risk losing their medical licenses.

Banning puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and surgeries has been a Republican priority for years, but they got enough support to overturn a veto.

Gov. Laura Kelly, a Democrat, had vetoed the bill, but the Republican-controlled Legislature overwhelmingly supported it, following the lead of other conservative states.
