The federal government owes Illinois nearly $2 billion in funding, the governor and legislators say, as they look to D.C. for answers.

Gov. JB Pritzker and 16 Illinois Democrats sent a letter to OMB Director Russell Vought on Tuesday demanding the Trump administration release $1.88 billion in federal funding to Illinois.

Illinois lawmakers are speaking out after a tense White House meeting Friday between President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Illinois Gov. Pritzker and various members of the Illinois congressional delegation have sent a letter to the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to demand accountability for $1.88 billion in federal funding being withheld from the state.

The governor traveled to Washington Tuesday to push for the release of frozen federal funds to Illinois and to warn of pending GOP budget cut to Medicaid affecting more than 700,000 Illinois residents.

Nearly $2 billion in federal funding is being withheld from Illinois, Gov. JB Pritzker and lawmakers said in a letter addressed to the Trump administration.

"President Trump's simpering fealty to Vladimir Putin and Russia is embarrassing and dangerous," Gov. JB Pritzker said.

Gov. JB Pritzker accused the Trump administration this week of continuing to withhold nearly $1.9 billion from Illinois state agencies, nonprofits and small businesses, despite the fact that an order to freeze those funds was rescinded after a federal judge issued a ruling blocking the freeze.

A meeting between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy grew contentious, with Trump telling Zelenskyy that "you're not acting at all thankful" for U.S. support.
