The snow, which has already covered parts of the metro’s roads and highways, could affect post-Thanksgiving holiday travel and shopping. According to the Kansas City Scout traffic management system, average highway speeds in the Northland have dropped below 30 mph.

A weak area of low pressure that developed over the Plains had enough moisture and cold air to produce the first measurable snowfall of the season from communities in Kansas to the Ohio Valley. A narrow band of snow formed over the Interstate 70 corridor dropping anywhere from 1-6" of snow and making travel slick.

A quick-moving weather system is set to bring the first measurable snow of the season to the Kansas City area on Saturday. An Impact Day has been declared due to the potential for accumulating snow and travel disruptions.

The heaviest bands moved through downtown Kansas City and stalled there for almost 2 hours, dropping 1-3 inches of snowfall with some pockets of 4 inches.

A cold snap has gripped the Kansas City area causing temperatures to plunge across the metro, the National Weather Service said. “Below normal temperatures are expected today (Friday) through Monday,” the weather service said.

After a warmer-than-average weekend in Kansas City, cold air has moved into the metro, setting up for a chilly Thanksgiving holiday week, the National Weather Service said. Temperatures climbed to a high of 65 degrees and fell to a low of 47 degrees on Sunday. The low on Sunday will be close to the warmest for the next seven days.
