Ocean County Sheriff Michael Mastronardy, who drew national attention for his hunt for the drones spotted in the skies over New Jersey in the late fall, said after U.S. Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J.'s press conference Dec. 14 in Seaside Heights about the unmanned aerial vehicles, they disappeared.

After pledging to quickly release a report about the mystery drones that have buzzed New York and New Jersey, including Staten Island, President Donald Trump has put a top White House staffer in charge of the effort.

"I’m going to give you a report on drones about one day into the administration," President Trump said earlier this month. Last month, Trump said "the government knows what is happening" when asked about the mystery during a news conference. Dozens of witnesses reported seeing the drones in the state beginning back in November.

Trump previously said he believes the Biden administration knew more about the rash of drone sightings over New Jersey than it let on.
