For decades, registered California voters would go to the polls in their neighborhood on Election Day, give their name and address to a poll worker sitting at a folding table, sign a paper registry, receive a ballot and vote.

California has consistently been one of the slowest states to count its votes after the Nov. 5 election. It’s home to two extremely tight House races, but only three-quarters of votes statewide have been counted thus far.

More than a handful of races are still too close to call, largely because the state’s commitment to vote-by-mail balloting guarantees the process will be slow.

It’s been two weeks since California counties started counting ballots on Election Day, and an estimated 620,000 votes remain to be processed. A handful of counties still have large batches of votes that they have not reported to the California Secretary of State,
