The consumer watchdog alleges the credit reporting giant conducted inadequate error reviews, potentially harming millions of Americans.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau sued the credit reporting agency alleging that if failed to investigate or correct errors in credit reports even when it had ample evidence supporting consumer disputes.

Experian does not properly investigate consumer complaints of errors in credit reports, threatening their access to credit, employment and housing, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said Tuesday.

The CFPB sued Experian, accusing the credit reporting bureau of violating “The Fair Credit Reporting Act” by not taking the proper steps to process, investigate and notify consumers about disputes. For example, the CFPB said when Experian asked creditors about disputes, they accepted responses that were improbable or illogical.
