The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued lake effect snow warnings for several counties across New York, effective Wednesday evening through Friday. Residents should prepare for significant snowfall, strong winds, and hazardous travel conditions, according to the Weather Service.

A significant storm system moving through the eastern third of the country will help trigger another arctic blast, with at least 10 to 20 inches of snowfall expected downwind of the major Great Lakes.

Wednesday morning will still have sparse snow. The snow will be occasionally heavy in lake-effect bands over southwest Lower Michigan, along the Lake Michigan shoreline, over much of the northern U.P. and even the far northeast part of Lower Michigan. The rest of Lower Michigan won’t have meaningful snow Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday at 3:20 p.m. the National Weather Service issued a lake effect snow warning valid from Wednesday 4 p.m. until Thursday 4 p.m. for Northern Erie and Southern Erie.

A Lake Effect Snow Warning has been issued for parts of Western New York this Wednesday through Friday. Expect school closings and cancellations.

The mid-December warmup is going to be short-lived. The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning for Jefferson, Lewis and Oswego counties starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday and lasting through 7 p.

Heavy lake-effect snow is expected to develop east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, with “multiple feet of snow” possible in the region.

Lake effect snow is set to hit parts of the Great Lakes region, including Michigan and western New York, throughout the week.
