Defense and quality pitching helped get the Pirates to extra innings Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field, setting up Isiah Kiner-Falefa to drive home the winning run and propel the Bucs to a 2-1 win over the Cubs.

Chicago’s offense was limited against Wheeler as it mustered just three hits and one run against the veteran. The Cubs missed a chance to pad the 3-2 lead they took in the 11th when Dansby Swanson struck out with one out and Pete Crow-Armstrong on second. A series of bunt singles in the bottom half of the frame ultimately sunk the team.

WASHINGTON — When Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd jogged to the mound in the eighth inning Wednesday, it was the first time he’d done so in a start since 2021. It represented a new accomplishment in an already impressive season after returning from 2023 Tommy John surgery in August of last year.

Matthew Boyd is a student of the game. He’s also one of the most positive, silver lining-focused guys in the Cubs’ clubhouse. Maybe that's because he has overcome obstacle after obstacle.

While it was the first time all season that Boyd fanned fewer than three, that didn't stop him from producing his third quality start in a row and ninth overall in 2025. The veteran left-hander had tallied at least six strikeouts in six of his prior seven outings before Monday,
