Larry Turner, the police officer and political novice whose long-shot challenge to San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria drew unexpectedly big money and competition in the late stages of the campaign, conceded the race Wednesday, eight days after the election concluded.

Gloria, who previously served on the City Council and in the state Assembly, was leading political newcomer Larry Turner, a Marine veteran and police officer, by 54.6% to 45.4% with 62% of ballots counted After polling 50.

Incumbent Gloria held a 54.5% share of the vote compared to Turner's 45.4%, a lead that has closed slightly since initial results but still appears insurmountable with a 33,000-vote deficit.
