In the mid- 2270s, a new Starfleet uniform design was introduced over the previous design, with many different variations. The uniform base was light gray, dark gray, white, or one of at least four shades of brown. Most involved matching trousers and tops or one-piece jumpsuits.

Along with the white medical uniforms, the engineering suits were carried over into Star Trek II. But the main crew uniforms would undergo a drastic transformation. Many felt Fletcher’s uniforms summed up everything that was disappointing about The Motion Picture: they lacked color and drama. They were bland.
