The Louisiana State Penitentiary, commonly known as Angola, is one of the largest maximum-security prisons in the United States. Situated on a sprawling 18,000-acre property once used as a plantation, Angola houses over 5,000 inmates, the majority of whom are serving life sentences without the possibility of parole (Vernon & Saxon, 2020).

Louisiana’s first State penitentiary, called “The Walls,” was located in the present-day downtown of Baton Rouge. Little remains of that first penitentiary: only the Warden’s House is still standing.

This is a list of adult state prisons in Louisiana. It does not include federal prisons or parish jails located in the state of Louisiana. The Louisiana Department of Public Safety & Corrections directly operates all except two.
