Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) 1939 – 1949. On 28 June 1939 King George VI established the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) for duty with the Royal Air Force (RAF) in time of war. Since 1938, RAF Companies had existed within the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS), the female force equivalent to the Territorial Army.

From Sierra Leone to the Short Stirling: the Story of Johnny Smythe
Jun 13, 2024 · John Henry Smythe was born in 1915 in Sierra Leone in West Africa. When he was 25, he responded to a call to the colonies from Britain for recruits.
