POV: YOU ARE IN WHITECHAPEL IN 1888 Whitechapel in 1888 was already one of the hardest places to live in London before the murders made it infamous. This was the East End: overcrowded lodging houses, casual labour, sweatshops, cheap pubs, street markets, workhouses, and people surviving one day at a time. Many residents lived in common lodging houses, paying a few pence for a bed, or even less for a place to sleep upright against a rope. Then came the Whitechapel murders. Newspapers turned the k
